The Clare Journal announces the death of the Reverend Philip Dwyer, for many years Vicar of Clare and Canon of Dysart, in the diocese of Killaloe, who will be remembered as a past Vicar of Cotton Stones. The sad event took place on Saturday after a brief illness. Our Irish contemporary describes him as one of the best known and most popular of the clergy. "With all classes he was the same, kindly, genial, and full of a rich vein of humour, which made him a favourite everywhere he went." He wielded a ready pen and his valuable History of the Diocese of Killaloe was a monument of his scholarly attainments, his great research and industry. In addition to this the canon published several other books, including The Siege of Londonderry with notes, original and selected from the best authorities on the subject; also A Guide to Lisdoonvarna, General Booth's Submerged Tenth.

Canon Dwyer was the youngest son of John Dwyer, barrister-at-law, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Doyne, of Wells, Wexford. The funeral took place on Wednesday at Weston super Mare and Mr. J. Selwyn Rawson, J.P. attended.
